Founded in 1890 when FL railroad and hotel king Henry Flagler sent a relative, Thomas Horace Hastings, inland to grow vegetables for Flagler's resorts. They incorporated as a town 19 years later. Hastings is known as the ''Potato Capital of Florida'' with 21,000 acres of potato farms, but also produces cabbage, onions, eggplant and ornamental horticulture.
